Hi Chaps, I have surfed the archives but no pearls on wisdom have helped yet.
i am preparing to remove my engine.
Trying to remove the carbs c/w inlet manifold.
Nuts off, i thought that would be the hard job. All disconnected.
all the studs are still in place.
The manifold refuses to budge, timber c/w hammers, nowt.
Thinking of a bottle jack from below to push up alternating with beating from the top.
Obviously the gasket is holding fast.
I need to get it off while the engine is secure in the car, as the head needs some work.
It it so darn awkward, may need to remove the carbs after all, but that is no bother.
Except for, use a bigger hammer, is there a more friendly way of separating them.

Tony, are you planning to take the head off? If so maybe you'll get better purchase on the manifold with the head removed? Can't say for definite, but I've taken the head off with the manifolds and carbs attached.
Have you tried spraying plusgas (not WD40!) in and around everywhere? Maybe there's a bit of tightness on a stud or two that that might ease.
Lumping it from above after a bottle jack? Be careful, but I'm sure you will be.
Would a bearing puller or similar on a stud give you purchase if you can cut away a bit of the gasket?
Sorry I can't suggest much else.
Good luck
Geoff

Hi Tony.....not sure how you have used timber and hammer......mine was stuck fast......first double check that you have removed all the nuts.....couple that you cant even see underneath but you can fee them.......i laid a thick towel across the top of the manifold then a piece of timber the full length of the flat manifold top......then a good hard whack....mine took a few increasingly hard blows.....checking after each one..... Thanks guys.
I'll remove the carbs, that will help with access from below.
Yes i will try and disturb the gasket and get some penetrating fluid into it.
The studs are part of the problem, they will have a grip on the m'fold. again p'fluid.
Slowly slowly.

If you have a RHD car with triple SUs this is not an easy job and personally I'd not recommend it.ETTony wrote:Thanks guys.

Just keep hitting the manifold with a deadblow hammer. You will break the gasket eventually.
Andrew.

Job done.
Removed SU's.
Pen fluid into stud holes and around gasket.
Some beating, hammer on wood, nope.
Bottle jack onto front carb flange from below to put some tension into joint, whacked the timber on the maniflold downwards a few times and hey presto, movement.
No problemo.
Thanks for your suport team
