#1 Dimensioned drawing search

Post by 265bhp » Wed Nov 29, 2017 6:52 pm

I have looked in the workshop manual, Haynes manual, the Knowledge section and Phillip Porters Definitive book for a dimensioned view of the car so I can look into building a jig for the forthcoming restoration of the shell
Does such a think exist..?..the dimensioned drawing in the original sales brochures is good for o/a dimensions but not detailed dimensions of the underbody area

Excellent, many thanks Steve...odd though..perhaps my Green Manual isn't original...?...my page N26 has a picture of the exhaust system and there is no page 27 and 28...is yours a 4.2 book...?...

Martin Robey did say to me that Jaguar actually didn't produce any drawings for a number of the E type body parts because it wasn't intended for volume production. He was trying to refurb some of the original worn press tools he bought from Jag but could get no definitive reference data in some cases.

How they put the stuff into production with no drawings is beyond me.

AFAIK Malcolm Sayer did not actually make drawings of his design . The whole thing was done as a series of coordinates which were given to pattern makers to make up an original buck . Thus the "drawings " were purely mathematical and the dimensions were taken from the pressed article . It sounds extraordinary but it obviously worked !

Jonathan ,

Glad to be of help, this was took from a 3.8 only manual although i have 2 others with the 4.2 supplement , i don't have a 4.2 only manual [ is that in a black folder ?] . I do have the gold 3.8 j30 and the black 4.2 works parts manuals though .

edit .... the Knowledge section 3.8 manual shows the same as mine
