#1 Grease Guns

Post by christopher storey » Thu Dec 28, 2017 10:39 am

I am sick and tired of my various bulk grease guns, all of which seem to exude grease from everywhere except where it is intended to go ( this despite 2 of them being quite expensive Sealey or similar ) . I have been wondering about cartridges . Does anyone use them? Do they fit in existing bulk guns ? Or is a new dedicated gun needed, and if so , which do you recommend ?

I use grease cartridges in both an electric and air powered guns. Seem to work well with little mess. Make sure you buy one with a nozzle that firmly clips onto the nipple to avoid grease seeping out there. Also be aware that some of the guns will not accept the standard cartridges (they are usually the cheap Chinese red ones off eBay).

The Sealey (or similar) cartridge gun let me down by having a poor nozzle for attaching to the nipple. I ended up taking a hacksaw to the nozzle to get it to release.
Though I wonder if some of the nipples on new items from a supplier were possibly part of the problem.
Sourcing decent nozzles might help with whichever new gun you buy.

Edited to add: one particular nozzle/nipple problem is on the top of the balljoints on front wishbones where they're fitted to a light plastic/metal cap. The nozzle wanted to pull the nipple out rather than release. Maybe there's a better way of attaching there?

If the nozzel wont release easily from the nipple you can usually unscrew the nozzel to release its grip.....however will be slippery so need to wipe it clean first..Steve

Thanks, Steve, couldn't even try that trick in this particular circumstance hence resorting to the hacksaw.
Still, b.....y annoying when you have do anything other than it simply coming off, grrr!!

I have a cartridge gun and it's so messy loading a new cartridge into it that I gave up and bought one that you have to fill from a tub of grease. I think that it's just the nature of the beast; they're just messy.

Thanks to all for the advice . It seems my thoughts of a non-messy process with cartridges was unrealistic :banghead:

If a clip-on gun oozes out of the nipple connection, a good tip is to place some thin cotton like a tee shirt over nipple before clipping the gun on. The gun easily forces through the textile into the grease cavity but less easily out the sides of thr nipple.

I added a flexible hose to my modern grease gun and it is much easier to use, especially for the rear driveshafts.

I think you must be doing something wrong. I use cartridge guns all the time & everything stays spotless. I recently bought a Sealey cordless gun & am very impressed. Like others on here I found they can be tight to release, but all you have to do is release the pressure & they will pop off.
The front suspension top joint grease nipple is a nightmare - it is a sort of self-tapping arrangement as the hole is not tapped from new, and they will pull out very easily. Ask me how I know.

Recently i got one of these, seems OK.
Uses 6 ball bearings to clench the nipple, instead of 3or4 'leaves'
Various prices on FleaBay.
A larger head so no go for steering shaft UJ, but fine for prop shaft.
