#1 What is this electrical component please?

Post by Jeremy » Thu Feb 22, 2018 7:34 pm

I can't find it in the parts catalogue or the wiring diagram. Small ali cylinder that looks like a flasher unit. Couldn't identify it when I was dismantling. You can see it here under the heater box, bolted to the engine frame flange where it meets the bulkhead:

From terminal AL it's connected to the alternator (4th terminal on RHS, which isn't in the diagram either) by a brown + yellow fabric insulated wire that's in the new loom exactly as in the original. It's earthed from terminal E. Terminal WL is not connected.
Any ideas please? Thanks!

It powers the alternator charging light. The circuit is closed when no charge is detected from the alternator which leaves the ignition warn8ng light lit. When current is detected, ie, engine running, the points open and the light goes out. Replace it with an electronic unit. I have some electronic units (taken off when we upgrade the alternator).

Thanks for clearing that one up for me Angus. Might I buy one of your units when I come for the open day?

I have a 24v Landrover and will be using a 24v to 12v Dc DC Battery charger to charge an auxiliary 12v battery. I can connect a light to it that shows when the battery is being charged but it is easier to see a light that has come on rather than one that goes off eg when an alternator is charging the light is off and the light comes on when the it has stopped charging.

I have been trying to work out how to get a indicator light on the dash to work when the Dc DC charger has failed or is not charging the 12v battery - just like an alternator system. This is the solution

I have looked on the SNG site but as I don't know what this unit is called or have a part number I am having trouble finding it - also which model etype it is off as my Series 3 does not have these as it has a more modern alternator ( )

So can someone tell me the correct name for the unit (an electronic one) and a part number.

Thanks
