#1 S2 prop shaft “sealed for life” spline boot replacement.

Post by Ropariva » Mon Jul 30, 2018 9:38 pm

In preparation for the return of my engine, I’ve removed my prop shaft to refurbish. I’d ordered the uni joints and replacement rubber gaiter/boot as shown in all the parts manuals only to find my spline assembly has a totally different, “sealed for life” spline end and boot. The only mention of this type of prop shaft I could find in my research was Chris Vines blog in which this was left untouched. Sadly I need to replace mine as it is split and I have now removed it and refurbished the unit. Does anyone know if this boot is available as a spare part, or if not has anyone made a suitable replacement for the exposed splines.
From the parts list. Note the spline assembly is very different

I reckon I used a bit of bike tube.

Good old Aussie ingenuity Andrew. The more I think about it, the simpler the problem gets. Reckon that’s probably what my dad would have said too.
Off to a bike shop tomorrow👍🏻

I think we used some superglue to hold the tube inside the main tube and I think we were able to reuse the original metal strap that holds the other end. It was 6 years ago though on my S1.5 so the details aren't fresh in my mind. The length of the rubber is obviously fairly critical too.
