#1 Grinding noise on acceleration

Post by Sjmmarsh » Wed Jul 24, 2013 5:45 pm

I have a S3 1973 V12 2+2 auto. I get an occasional grinding noise from the rear of the car (left if I had to choose) when I accelerate away. It only happens in 1st gear and moderate to hard acceleration - a gentle set off avoids it.

I can't see any witness marks from the tyre rubbing an arch (but haven't had the wheels off yet) - is this the most likely cause, or are there other things I should be looking for?

Steve

Hi Steve, you should check the 4 universal joints in the IRS, 2 each side, for a collapsed bearing. Push/pull and twist each shaft, to see if there is any extra play, preferably with the car’s weight on the rear wheels. Replacing them is not a major job.
Best of luck.
Joe.

Hi Steve.....the universal joint and bearing inside the rear hub carrier has a metal cover protecting it from dirt ect its attached to the driveshaft....very easy for these to grind against the inside of the hub carrier.. Steve
