Does anyone have an opinion on the efficacy of the metal shields for the drive shaft outer UJ's ?
I'm told they don't do much and are more a nuisance.
I don't have any fitted.

You are correct . They achieve very little ( and IIRC eventually were abandoned by Jaguar on later versions of the suspension ) and often cause noise problems by rubbing against the hub carriers

Sorry chaps, they do perform a function.
On the few E-Types that are driven on days other than when the sky is blue and the roads are dry the boot protects the UJ from road dirt thrown up by the tyres.
The UJs are strategically positioned just where shit from the inner wheel arch dribbles down.

One could be cynical and suggest they were abandoned so that spare UJs could be sold more often........
All I”ll say is that after a run in shitty conditions the boots on my car are covered in shite. But the UJs inside are not. YMMV.
