Door drop glass seal gets dragged under

Just been building up my driver's door. All going OK, except for the waist level scraper seal. When I lower the window the seal catches on the glass and turns downwards, too much friction, causing the window to bind. (I took it off and pressed on, pleased with how the frame sits:)


Any suggestions how to get the seal to "float" on the glass rather than stick to it? Is there any way to reduce the grip of the rubber? Should I trim it back so it just kisses the glass, rather than press against it? Or does someone supply a more supple version, perhaps with a felted rear face (this one is from SNG)?

Try a little silicone spray on the seal to reduce the friction of the rubber. It will streak the glass for awhile but will clean up after a few cleanings. With luck your seal will remain non sticky enough after one or two applications.

Also check that the chrome window frame is pushed outwards at the point it bolts to the top of the door so it pushes the glass up against the seal so more of an angle is put on the seal making it more difficult for it to fold over.

Thanks John. The gap between glass and door was quite wide (maybe 12mm or so) towards the rear and could be closed up somewhat without messing up the alignment with the quarterlight pillar. Is there an "ideal" distance between glass and door? Trial and error I guess...

Hi Jeremy,
I had the same problem, I solved it trying seals from different suppliers, unfortunately cant remember where the last (working) one came from.
I also tried Baines, his profiles were flocked inside but were missing the metal strip.
I remember cleaning back the inside top of the lip with fine emery paper.

Hi Mark, I found a seal with flock on the reverse and a rigid (plastic) reinforcing strip. Vintagecarparts.co.uk in North Walsham. Have just ordered so will see how that works.

Same thing just happened to me. It appeared that the entire seal was rolled too far towards the glass when riveted with the holes in the seal as supplied.
My solution was to drill out the rivets , again( two of which I replaced with tiny screws because the glass was too close to use the rivet gun ) , make the rivet holes in the metal reinforcing part of the seal lower ( bigger ) with a file , then hold them in place while attaching them again.

I had exactly the same with seals supplied from SNG.
Impossible to get the window down with pulling in the sea seal.

In the end I discovered they supplied the wrong item. My needed to have some felt towards the glass.

Took me 24 hours, a scratched door screen and bloody hands to get it all back to correct working order. Fortunately I found some original seals.

The felt or flock surface is definitely the answer to the friction problem.
The vertical rigid section is a bit too thick as supplied for the barbed clips, but because it's plastic it is very easy to file down in five places for the clips. You can put a kind of knife edge on it to give a good lead for the clip. I used a mole wrench (with a small piece of wood to protect the top of the door) to squeeze the clips into place. I don't think you'd manage it with the glass in position, using a bent metal hook.
