My crank will be down to the last undersizes by the time Chesmans have finished with it, so maybe it would be a good idea to find another.
Can someone enlighten me regarding how year/model specific a late 1961 engine crankshaft has to be ? What else will fit etc ?
Mine is pre-rope-seal, but as I'm going for their lip-seal conversion, with the associated modification to the crank, maybe this widens up my choices ?
Finding another Series 1 crank ?

If yours is a scroll type crank, then it is almost certainly not original, and in all probability it is from an early 3.4 engine built up to about 1954/55 which IIRC is about when the changeover to a rope seal occurred. As far as I know, all the non-4.2 cranks are interchangeable. Incidentally, somewhere on the crank should be stamped the engine number of the unit to which it was originally fitted which will give you a definite answer

Interesting.
Don't have the crank to hand to check the number, it's 1.500km away.
I had always thought that from engines R1 to R2563, the C.4808/1 cranks in the 3.8 had the scroll, with a rear carrier C.16137/S to suit, and that the rope seal arrived from engine R2564 onwards, mounted in the new rear carrier C.19648, together with a crank that became C.18350/1 ?
So my R1995 would have had the early non-rope seal crank ?
If this early crank fits a wide range of cars that came before, it should be easy to find one ?
Perhaps less easy to find one that's not seen various regrinds ...................

Rory, is it worth contacting Ken Jenkins (http://www.ukjag.co.uk/stock/) to see if he can help supply one?
Otherwise would any of the engine restorers, Rob Beere, CMES, etc. be able to help? You've probably already tried them in which case ignore my ramblings

David - and Rory : absolutely fascinating . I had always been under the impression that from about the time of the introduction of the Mark VIIM the rope seal had been used . What is equally interesting is that the parts are not interchangeable i.e. you cannot retrofit a rope seal to an earlier engine
