The original is behind and should suck.

Only behind the radiator and sucking. Putting one in front disrupts the airflow and reduces cooling.

As David and Julian said, a fan drawing air through the radiator is vastly superior to one mounted in front. For even greater efficiency, find one that integrates with the original radiator shroud.

I can recommend the cool cat fan. Fits directly on the mounting bracket for the old Lucas motor and comes with a multi blade fan that sits within the existing shroud to maximise air flow through the radiator. Other than the vast increase in the number of blades it looks original to the untutored eye.

Especially if you paint two of the opposing blades silver - has got past concours judges in the US!
