#1 Pulling engine out

Post by Joes66 » Wed Jun 10, 2020 7:38 am

I am shortly going to remove my engine and gearbox from my 69 2+2
I understand that the best way is to take it out through the bottom
Can I do this without removing the front suspension?
I.e I want to be able to roll the car once it's out and dont want to end up with it stuck in one place
The reaction plate I think is the problem which needs to be removed to let the engine go down as I lift the front of the car up
Can I remove just the reaction plate?
Many thanks for any answers

Yes...full details in the service manual.......you need to be competant as there is a lot of tension in the torsion bars...or you can detatch the hubs to release tension...remove/disable torsion bars....then remove reaction plate.....then re connect hubs and replace dampers with a suitable setting link (timber works) to be able to roll car....Steve

The reaction plate has to be removed whichever way you remove the engine, so don't let that affect your choice of method

I always disconnect the top balljoint on the suspension so the upright is free to rotate with the torsion bar - that relaxes the torsion bar and makes teh reaction plate easier to remove.

I generally remove the engine from below, i found that a lot less stressful but you do of course need to remove the entire inlet manifold. Fairly straight forward to do but time consuming
