engine issue my specialist can't fix ... help!

Need to adjust the idle as it's running too. It's coping with the hot weather well.

What a great ending to this story with super photos to go with it. I went "phew" with you Jonny when you recovered that bit from the cylinder! And what a brilliant forum this is with such expertise only a finger click away.

Thanks Jeremy and Yves Sainte Marine is wonderful, can see the various boats coming in and going out. The e has developed a knocking noise on braking from the front drivers side brakes/ suspension. Any suggestions?

Easiest thing first - have you checked the spinner is on tight? Give it three good whacks with the mallet and see if that cures it. Then go over all the fasteners on that side with a spanner and confirm they are all tight.

My son's Mini started doing just that. Clonks on braking and going over bumps. I just went round the front suspension and tightened every nut and bolt in sight (one or two were distinctly loose). That fixed it.

So much for those people who say the spinners are self-tightening!

Just got home after a great trip in the xke. On leaving the ferry it started overheating. Reading constant 105 when normally it runs 70 to 90. The electric fans are both working ok and checked the coolant in the reservoir and all ok. Stopped three times on the thankfully short journey back home. I refueled as well and noticed the fuel gauge is off the scale which I don't remember happening before. Are these somehow related?! Misreading? It's in the garage cooling down although it doesn't seem unusually hot. Any help appreciated greatly.

Jon, fuel and water temperature gauges are powered via the small voltage regulator (VR) in the instrument panel.
If you still have the original style bimetallic strip type of VR, then it is simply misacting and therefore your gauges are no more accurate.
Best would be to move to a modern VR, that you can either build yourself or buy.
Glad you enjoyed the trip and that you only faced this matter on the last leg.
Hope to have been of service

Thanks Ralph,
I have just checked with Warren who rebuilt it and ....
They are on a modern solid state regulator already you just need very small screw driver to adjust, I initially set it using output voltage but it may need a tweak now things have settled down a bit. It's located in the original position behind the dash.

You need to set the VR output voltage to 10v to get as near an accurate reading as these gauges will indicate. If the VR is faulty you can make one for about £1; it has the benefit of being non adjustable and set to always output the correct voltage. Details in the upgrade section.
