#1 Engine numbers

Post by Bernie2015 » Wed Aug 01, 2018 6:28 am

Hi All,

I am considering buying a Series 1 car. The head is matching numbers but the block has the numbers that I dont recognise and I wondered if anyone had any knowledge of this. The car is in the USA and they say the engine is a dealer replacement block engine with the numbers 0514 in the casting? Any thoughts gratefully received.

It might be but how could they prove it.

Essentially, treat it as a non matching numbers car.

People often get confused between the casting numbers on a block, which are applied by the foundry, and have no identifying significance , and the factory engine number which will be either on the left hand side of the periphery of the bellhousing flange at the rear of the crankcase , ( near the dipstick ) and /or just above the oil filter housing

Be careful it is not an XJ6 engine. A lot of E-types in the US have had XJ6 engines as replacements. Engine numbers can be notoriously difficult to find. On my 1969 S2 OTS it is on the top of the oil filter housing. i only found it after extensive cleaning using a wire brush on a die grinder when the engine was out. It was also stamped on the flywheel.
