Of course Lewis Hamilton doesn't look over his shoulder going round a race track at speeds up to 200mph, but I bet he does on the roads. Saved my skin a number of times on bike and in car.
No F1 driver is able to use a life saver in the cockpit of their racing car, the HANS device prevents it. John Surtees and Nigel Mansell will have used the life saver on the roads, as both became members of the IAM after racing.

Also bear in mind that, as a car driver, the "life" the life-saver saves might not necessarily be your own.....

I don't know of any cars whose mirror coverage is immune from blind-spots. Even my bang-up-to-date family car with huge great elephant-ear door mirrors recognises this fact with visual and audible 'radar' warnings to tell you of other road users in your blind-spot.

That said, as someone who puts in reasonably serious miles on a road bike, I'd say that 80% of motorists never use their mirrors - let alone bother with a life-saver check!

:yeahthat:

My current daily driver has by far the worst blind spots of any car I've owned, including the SLK I had prior to this.

What's worse is that you wouldn't expect it to be the case with it being an SUV.

Simon...it is not a blind spot collision. It is two drivers fighting for the same real estate.

Thanks everyone for the replies. My question was largely about the aesthetics of the car, not so much about the technique of using them.
It is good to see however that no matter what point of view is offered it is obvious that everyone is sincere about safe driving and other road users.
I have done further research and it seams in my state I will need at least one door mirrior.
Thanks again for the input.
Cheers,
Richard

I drove about 60 miles in my OTS today. The door mirror has fallen off and I have yet to reattach it.
It's pretty uncomfortable without it.
