Hi All,
There is excessive play in the steering so I have just removed the upper column. The rubber bushes have deteriorated on both ends and I will replace them. I am having difficulty separating the shaft that connects to the the steering wheel from the inner colum (see photo) any tips would be appreciated as I would like to clean all parts before reassembly. Also can anyone suggest anything else that could be done while its apart? Many thanks.

The new Elastollan bushes can be a problem because whilst the make the steering wheel feel nice and tight when the car gets hot they cause the steering to stiffen, squeak and you lose self-centring. I have always had to use a Dremel and sanding drum to carefully remove material from the inner part of the Elastollan to get the desired fit. It takes some time as you have to sand both, replace steering shaft (with steering wheel attached), check for fit and repeat. Ideally there should be some play felt using the tips of your fingers on the rim of the wheel. Take your time and order a spare set of bushes as you will likely overdo it the first time.
As regards removing the inner splined part you first need to remove the stop button which restricts movement of the shaft:

I have removed the screw already that keeps it in place but it still wont budge I'm afraid. There is a great video on you tube(link below) showing removal of the column for anyone else attempting this. Any other parts that should be replaced while its out? Thanks for the info re the seals, I will look into that before buying them.

in which case I would apply heat and attempt to use a drift to tap out the centre column. It needs to be free moving otherwise you will not be able to adjust the column for reach. As regards the rest nothing should need replacing so just reassemble it with care and check continuity of the horn push before reinstalling in the car. On no account use any oil or grease on the shaft as it will destroy the Elastollan bearings. A very thin film of silicone grease could be used but best to keep it free of lubricant.

Don't. There are plastic insulators under the brass horn contact and inside the shaft.Bernie2015 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 04, 2018 5:20 pmThanks David that's very helpful I will give it a go with some heat.
As long as it slides enough for steering wheel adjustment you're bot really achieving anything. Give it a in kero and grease the splines and put it back.
