Good evening all.
Am i right in thinking that all XK engine oil filter housing will fit on any block?
For example can i fit a spin on XJ6 housing to a early 4.2 block?

Yes, use anything that fits and has a suitably-rated relief valve. There are four-hole and five-hole types but just use the number of bolts common to both parts.

Hi Lee..have a good look at whatever you use to ensure you use the correct gasket..there are a few different types and very easy to use one that will actually block the i/put or o/put....Steve

Be very careful if you are playing with 3.8 blocks, for example putting the oil filter assembly off a mk2 on to a block used in a mk9 will result in zero oil pressure, in some applications Jaguar used a steel plate sandwiched between the block and oil filter housing to block off relevant oil passages.
Learnt this one the hard way after much head scratching!

I can't see anything like that in the XK parts book or Mk2 or MkVII-MkIX books. The early XK120s did have a gear pump and floating pick-up but I'm not clear that made much difference to the largein/out main block passages at the block. There is a main bearing gallery drilling normally blanked off by a grub screw but that's on 4.2s as well.
Not saying it didn't happen, obviously, but suspect you were caught out by something non-standard perhaps? Gasket matching to filter block is obviously critical, but with a separate steel plate you'd need a different one each side, presumably? Anyway, caveat fitter, I guess.
