#1 Windscreen wires?

Post by TheDampMan » Sun Oct 21, 2018 4:54 pm

Hi all
My windscreen has these connectors, I can see 2 wires in the windscreen, not sure if this is an Ariel or something else?

Very, very strange. I have never seen anything like those on screens of this era. Could it be a heated screen ? Or could they perhaps be rain sensors for automatic wipers ? I would try a circuit test on each one , and both together. If there is continuity between the two of them it would suggest the possibility of heating . I do notice a very thin line running up the screen - or is this a reflection ?

There are wires in the screen running vertically from the connectors to top of the screen then along the top where they appear to end.

I would say these are for a heated front screen....they are available as an after market option. They were not supplied when the cars were new. You need a switched supply with a 15 amp fuse from the ignition live (white wire) power feed added to get the heater to work. One screen connection goes to ground and the other to the extra switch The connections are wrong for an aerial....

If the wires in the glass form a "T" made of two inverted "L"s, and there is no connection between them, then it's probably an antenna.

There is no continuity between the 2 connectors so presume its not a heated screen ?
I can only think its an areal but how would you connect these to the radio?

My guess is there should be continuity i am afraid. Look very carefully at the screen. Heated ones have fine often zig zag wires set about 5 to 10 mm apart. The terminations are simply not vhf radio coneections....

Hi Steve,
I have a heated front windscreen with ariel.
I have not fitted it yet, but it is all wrapped up and stored away.
The photos I have indicate that there are four terminals, two at bottom centre and one each at the bottom sides.
I 'think' that the two at the side are for the heated windscreen and the two in the middle are the ariel.
No Idea why there are two connections, but if you look at the wires in my pictures you will see that there appears to be two seperate wires; not connected (two ariels in one?)

Just a quick update on this I sent an email to Nick Gardiner (Commercial Manager Pilkington Classics) below is his reply
Hi Steve
That’s one of our Antenna screens, they are to connect up to the radio, you will need some kind of conversion from our terminal to the spade though – im not sure how that being done but I know E Type UK are doing it so perhaps they can advise?

Hi Steve,
I would be interested to know what you find out about the wiring of your screen, as I am likely to face the same problems soon.

Thanks,

Paul
