Handbrake pivot bolt

I have a problem taking apart the handbrake mechanism on my 1962 E type.
I have seen some with a hex headed pivot bolt, a thread and split pin hole.
I have seem these fastened with a castle nut, but mine is completely different, and I can find nothing to reference it.
The bolt has a round head, and the other side seems to have no nut or thread that is visible, and no split pin or nut of any kind.
I have tried screwing/unscrewing, tapping and just about every other motion you can think of to no avail. It simply will not move in and out more than 1mm.
There must be some sort of pin or thread I cannot see, but as I said, I have tried rotary motion to no avail.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

My car is a late 63, and it had the threaded pivot and castle nut setup.



However, looking at the parts book, there were a few variations so I’m guessing yours would be kept in place with a circlip of some description. In the CMC Restoration Book, they show this:



You can see the round head like yours and a groove at the other end for, presumably, the ‘e’ clip.

Could it be that the clip is still in place on yours?

Hi Richard yes that is the set up I have, and I have removed the circlip...I will have a good look now I have your picture of the parts and see if I can fathom it from that thank you for posting that it is most helpful

I have exactly the same pivot from my ‘62 OTS
I have recently rebuilt it

You have removed the circlip correctly


Apply some penetrating oil

The pivot pin should knock out using a drift/hammer OR
You could try a press OR a bench vice with the help of some socket heads of various sizes.
Trust me, it will shift

I replated and chromed the bits and rebuilt it

Be aware that the thickness of the chrome playing may make it hard to get the circlip back in place ...mention this to your chromer

Check you can see the groove for the circlip first. If you can’t, someone might have riveted the end of pin over.

Hi, just to add I have an early 3.8 FHC handbrake, shown unrestored below, alongside a later, restored 4.2 FHC version. The 3.8 one doesn't have a threaded bolt and appears to be peened over. At some point in the last 50 years plus it might of had a circlip but I cant see a groove.







The last picture shows what the 4.2 pivot bolt looks like out of the mechanism.

File off the peened over portion until it is flush with the lever. Then press it out. It will be much easier that way.
