#1 Series 1 bonnet wiring loom fixation points ?

Post by Durango2k » Fri Dec 21, 2018 8:51 pm

Hi there,

How and where is the front bonnet wiring loom bolted to the metal parts ?

Its tricky for me to describe - below the front left lamp there is a short piece of about 15 cm just from the plug to the main „power distribution“, the 10 point plastic carrier.

From that main connector, there‘s a long loom, with eyelets on both ends and the two indicator wires on each end. Obviously, the side „with more wires“ goes to the left, into the main connector. Where do the eyelets go ? There are 2 holes on each side in the main air ducts, I guess into the upper holes ?

Then, the main loong loom is loose. How and where is it fixed onto the underpan ?

Behind the lamps, the wires come out of the black „pots“ on top, and go straight to the hole in the vertical panel. There‘s a rubber bunge in the hole so it‘s water proof. I guess there is a wire clamp on the one unused hole next to the black „pot“ ?

I managed to solve one part of the puzzle. Checking through the whole Factory Fit 3.8 thread I found that the upper inner bolt from the sugar scoop was used to put a cable clamp there. I have the clamps, re-zinced, so I‘ll put them there. Easy.

One more point: I only have the stineguard frame, not the mesh. It seems it cannot be bought without the frame ? So- which way around is the frame mounted (I guess it „opens“ to the front ?), and how is the mesh attached ? I can see long strips on the sides of the wire mesh- are these soldered, or just bolted to the frame?

Hi Paul,

Could you please get me some measures, L1 to L 4 ? I am trying to replicate this bit as good as I can...

...As I had some (unexpected) free time today I fiddled with the stoneguard and this came out:

Image

Now, I found that I do not need the two distance pieces shown at SNG: BD20579

https://www.sngbarratt.com/de/#!/Deutsc ... 0f09d095de

Why is it ? Am I missing something?

And there‘s a second row of three holes for bolts on each side of the inner bonnet, along the air ducts, more evenly spread. Maybe I have the wrong stoneguard frame? Mine is from a 3.8 I think, and it has two near-spaced holes on th bottom and near the top, plus two on the top horizontal bar which just keeps the grid on the frame.

... I may have found the explanation for the second row of holes: are they for the S2 fan carrier ? The spacing of the holes looks to be correct for it:

Image

Means that when they built my S1.5 bonnet they knew of the S2 fan carrier already....like the second set of holes in my flywheel.

The S2 fan carrier bolts to the radiator frame not to the "inner bonnet".

Hi Tadek,

Thanks!

I have checked the Imgur picture, but I think something is different. There are no holes „more towards the nose“, and even if I revert the frame so that the long part goes forward I would not gain that depth.

Maybe the design changed with the 2+2 ?

It just looks and feels as if it‘s intended the way I put it in. Only problem would be to get some nuts or bolts into the holes in the underpan / you can reach in through the side holes or from the nose / front now. The later to be blocked by the motif bar later on.

Then, you found L 4 to be 47 mm. In my case, I used a 10 mm spaced grid, so I have around 3x10 plus 3x 1 mm wire thickness, say 33 mm below the frame. Strange...

NOTE PLEASE: the measurements I have given to you are for the narrower net!

There seem to be 2 types and I just realized this after buying off ebay the wrong one :-(

Image

Anyone knows for which e-type is the narrower net??

From what I read the V12 / S3 are different.

Interesting detail is the spacing of the holes on your grey frame: this looks like my „second row“ of holes. The rusty one upfront (wich I would sandblast, zinc and re-use) has a different hole spacing in the side parts. 1 top 2 bottom.

Hi Carsten,

I am sorry, I no longer have the original to measure.

The Series Two stone guard is narrower and mounts further forward in the bonnet mouth.
I have converted my Series One to Series Two size as I am fitting AC and needed more room in front of the radiator for the Condenser.

I think that the reason you do not need the distance pieces is that you have mounted your stone guard futher forward in the Series Two position. You have ether made or fitted a Series Two stone guard.
Both sets of mounting holes are available in the bonnet.

Image

Unfortunately I do not have a picture of the stone guard in its new position at the moment, but this is my converted stone guard.

Hi Paul,

Ok thats it then.

The bonnet picture you posted shows three sideway holes mostly even spaced like x..x..x. Thats a Series 1 part. Spacers needed because it is further back / nearer towards the radiator.

The one you adapted is like mine, like x....x.x. Thats an S2 part. No spacers needed because its nearer towards the nose.

I‘ll stay with the S2 one - it will work and it looks nice, „as it should“.

So, we‘re all left with just one question, then (music of X files in the background....):

Why did they include both sets of holes - does it not mean that from a certain point onwards, they knew what would come, and included both sets of holes ? But why ? To ease the spare parts debate - one item fits both models ?

I have puzzled around this since I found the second set of holes on my flywheel...

Thanks for your help!

...and Tadek has a grey S1 frame plus a complete S2 stone guard setup, then.
