#1 S2 matching numbers block & cylinder head

Post by Wilder » Tue Jan 08, 2019 7:32 pm

I believe at some point during S2 production, that jaguar stopped stamping the engine number into the cylinder head.
Does anyone know when this happened?
I cannot find the number on my car which is an OTS from 10/69
Any help or photos where to look would be appreciated.

I think it was during late 67 that they switched to bare aluminium un-numbered heads for the 68 models. The engine number stayed above the oil filter for a bit longer before migrating to the left upper bell housing flange.

There is no published date when they stopped stamping the heads. I don't believe it necessarily coincided with a change in part number or head colour though.

Well here is one to file for future reference. I think you all may find it really interesting.

Dear Jonathan

Thank you for your enquiry regarding:

Whether a USA specification Jaguar E type S2 (4.2) from October 1969 would have left the factory with the engine number stamped into the cylinder head.

Thank you for confirming that your vehicle is a S2 E-type and supplying the chassis number: 1R 10***; and engine number: 7R 70**-9.

I can confirm the following. During Series 2 E-type production, from engine numbers 7R 6306 and 7R 38106 the location of the stamped in engine number was moved to the rear of the left-hand side of the block, on the flange of the bell-housing, and cylinder head was no longer stamped with the engine number.

Yes but that doesn't mean they hadn't stopped stamping the number onto the cylinder head before then.

I believe 7R6306 was produced around August '69 (Porter).

Just to add an Aug 1969 service bulletin (in knowledge base) confirms engine number moved to left side of engine from engine No 7R6306 & 7R38106......no mention on number on head.......Steve
