#1 Water in Air Intake Box

Post by Ian Cooke » Thu Feb 28, 2019 7:39 pm

Hi All

I took my Air Intake box off today to change the air filter and found some water in the box. Not a huge amount, probably a teaspoon or two. Should I be concerned?

Thanks for any advice.

The breather pipe from the front of the head connects to the inlet plenum. this pipe should have a small hole in the bottom, lowest part to allow condensate to drain out. If the pipe has been painted, this is often covered and blocked. Make sure it is open and you should not get water into the filter housing.

Thanks Jerome

I've taken the breather pipe off and can't see a hole in it. It's not painted so if there was a hole it should be easy to spot. Should I drill a hole and if so, is close to the inlet plenum the best place?

Sorry for slow response.

If it is the original pipe it will have the hole, probably blocked with much.

If not, drill a 3mm hole at what looks like the lowest point - on the under side, yes, probably close-ish to te plenum.

Thanks Jerry

I think that mine can't be original as there's definitely no hole. I'll drill one as you suggest.

Hello Ian,
.. just FYI:

I was reading my "Factory Original Jaguar E-type" book by A. D. Clausager et al, and came to an early page listing: Changes by engine number and the entry for Feb 1962 from engine number R4223 read:

Breather pipe modified, hole drilled in underside to prevent condensation entering engine, SB B.17

..... so yours definitely should have the hole .......... unless they backed off this later. I doubt it. My 1970 4.2l definitely has the hole.

Thanks Jerry

Mine now has a hole as I drilled one last week!

Hopefully this will do the trick.
