#1 Door frame problem? Fhc

Post by dlgis » Mon Jun 27, 2022 4:26 pm

Hi all, we’ve been trying to sort out a very sticky window on my fhc series 1. It jams when its about 2/3rds up in the frame. So now we’ve resorted to taking the frame out and there’s a kink in the frame on the rear side a little over half way up (see pic). Is this kink normal or have we got a bent frame and therefore that’s what is causing the glass to stick on it’s travels ? :scratchheadyellow:

Thanks

I had the same problem. And the same kink

My window is now only a little stiff on the top 2”
Does the window go up and down nicely with the door open?

Hi, no the window has been very stiff since i bought the car irrespective of whether the door’s open or closed. But, i think we may have found the problem. I suspect the kink I showed in the pic is normal, but both of the frame uprights were bent by up to 5mm in the other plane i.e. if you were to lay the complete frame flat. So maybe someone had been pulling on the top of the frame when it was fitted to the door to adjust the top end fit  We’ve straightened these bends out and now when out the car the glass moves much more freely in the frame. I think this may have resolved the problem, but we ran out of time to reinstall it today. I’ll update when we’ve refitted in case it helps anyone else 👍

I had similar issues with my frame not being true in various planes.
I ended up also remaking the bottom brackets to get a satisfactory fit, although these may have already been modified.

That rear channel should be straight. Unfortunately though they often do get bent to make the frame fit the body contour.

Straightening it seems to have solved the sticking problem.

As suggested above the adjustment for the top of the door to body fit is at the bottom of the frame. What you need to do is to pack the frame out, or remake the L shaped brackets, so that you end up with the top of the door correct. This can be quite a fiddle.

Sorry I beg to differ. The kink should be there. The section below the kink should run parallel to the front frame. The bottom 2-3" of the glass is also kinked. With the glass fully wound down the upper part of the glass moves foward & out of the upper rear channel section, & only re-enters the channel again as the glass nears the top. It's desined like that to miss the door lock in the rear edge of the door.

Yeah I’m with Randall on this, the kink looks designed in. I’ll get it all back in the car on Friday when I’m up at the garage and report back 👍

All back together again and much improved but still not as smooth as the passenger window. Might be due to the new scrapper rubber needing to bed in. It’ll have to do for now.
