#1 crankshaft damper removal

Post by MarkRado » Thu Mar 14, 2019 8:17 am

Hi all,
I need to replace the front crank oil seal on a 1970 4.2 engine (a 420G engine actually), this means the crankshaft damper has to come off. The bolt and the servo pulley have come off without problems, but the damper does not move (using two opposite levers betwenn block and damper). Engine is in car, so space is restricted. Any ideas "how to"?
Thank you
Mark

Shouldn't be too tight, might just gently tap off.

If not, rig up a pulley like this using the original damper bolt with some thick washers.

I used a puller similar to this.

None of the bolts in the kit I had are the right thread for the damper, but I was able to use the originals that secure the front pulley on. The damper sits on a cone insert, so it’s pretty tight.

Thanks James and Tom, damper undone!
I put the big crank bolt back in, reversed the servo pulley and put it back on with the four orig setscrews. I did not have anything really suitable at hand to use as a barrier between the inside of the pulley and the big bolt, so I used 3 bolts (3/8 diam) instead. I tightened the four orig setscrews crosswise and evenly- but the force needed was more than I had expected. The splint cone did not come off without destroying it, however.

Well done, very ingenious.

If it’s any consolation, I managed to destroy the split cone too.
