#1 Palnut on steering column

Post by Gfhug » Tue Jun 04, 2019 11:20 am

Jaguar fit a palnut on the steering wheel/column as a safety feature to stop the main nut from loosening off. But why a palnut and not a shakeproof washer or similar? Wouldn't they do the same job?

Yes, they are reusable which is one advantage but ten or more times the price of a shakeproof or lock washer.

Thanks for any thoughts or opportunity to improve my education (at my age  )

Mine has a plain nut and washer. Not noticed any loosening

You need the Palnut - it is a safety related item and simple to fit. Richard Smith has had them made.

Another word to add to the lexicon! This must be my lucky week. Only yesterday a mate of mine was telling me he was having to lay off riding his bike for a while after having damaged his flagina....

Richard makes over 300 E-Type parts and supplies to the usuals. He has a stall at Stoneleigh and regularly updates the Forum on his latest products: http://forum.etypeuk.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6798

He sells direct but you have to order by phone or email. Top bloke who knows more about E-Type originality than most others and also has a large stock of original and rare parts (at a price!).

I presume the pal nut screws on as opposed to push fit ?

Yes, finger tight will do although I put a hex socket on it and nip it up. If you over-tighten it will strip its thread.
