Dynamo
#1 Dynamo
Dear all
My March ‘62 has a replacement dynamo part number 22910 with a date of 11-68 (I can’t see if it’s a C42 or not)
I understand that it should have a number 22902 /C42
My questions
1. Do I get the one I have restored and, if so, would it work ok for my car?
2. Should I try to find a 22902 of an earlier type ?

#2 Re: Dynamo
The C42 dynamo's were all numbered 229xx with differences being mounts and connectors amongst other internal items. You can check through the various Lucas catalogues in the Knowledge Base if you want more information but if it fits then go ahead and use it. The C42 fitted to the E-Type was actually numbered 22902A/B.
By 1965 the only cars which had them were the Mk2 and 'S' models with variances depending whether power steering was fitted.

Thanks David
It came fitted to the car and so I’ll get it reconditioned locally and use it...I was thinking about a dynamator or such like but it’s a lovely original early car so I’m going to stay with the dynamo(maybe change to neg earth)

Yes, changing to -ve earth is sensible and easy; vital if you intend using a SatNav or phone charger. There is a conversion guide in the Knowledge Base.

Hi
Thanks
Mine has the slightly earlier March '62 single groove
It looks like my pulley is in the right ball park for diameter

Robbie
I've just measured mine and it's 3&1/8" in diameter and single groove.
When I bought my car in 2011 it was running with a Lucas 11AC alternator and this size of pulley wheel brazed onto the front. I discovered that this was because the shaft of the original dynamo is slightly wider than the equivalent on the alternator and this setup was cobbled together to keep running with the single V fan belt.
I subsequently found another pulley wheel of the same diameter that fitted directly onto the alternator.
Apologies for the long winded answer.
Cheers
Alan

#13 Re: Dynamo
Hi Robbie,
sorry for my delayed reply. My dynamo has a date code of 62, but the car is late 63, so obviously neither matching nor original. I got tired oiling and replacing the rear bearing bush (receiving exessive heat from the exhaust manifold esp on long highway journeys) again and again. I already had made up a custom heat shield, but instead of searching for a matching replacement plus restoration, I replaced it with an alternator-dynamo lookalike called dynamator (using the orig pulley). Not expensive and definitely an improvement regarding output esp at low revs/ around town. Lets see how many years it will last...
