Hi all,
after 30 years it seems that time has come for a new clutch (increasing judder and an oil leak at the rear of the crank). This means crank out, and, following that, I guess new main /thrust bearings. What else, how far should I go? I dont want to do a complete engine rebuild.
Thank you for your inputs,
Mark

Hi, not all oil leaks at the rear of the engine turn out to be the rear main seal. People assume this is the cause but it very often turns out to be the rear seal on the sump, especially if it is a bad oil leak. I have seen this a couple of times with both my brothers car and on a friends car.

Mark : Suggest new oil pump, and check the bronze distributor/oil pump drive . The other thing while the crank is out which I would regard as essential is that delightful job of removing the plugs on each big end journal, thoroughly cleaning out , and fitting new plugs

I'll second the sump-gasket diagnosis. Oil can come out of here in a big way, especially at the rear. The rear main turd seal usually won't produce a large volume of oil when it fails. Before taking things apart, give everything under there a good pressure wash, then take the car out for a drive and see where it's leaking. If you do pull the engine and find oil on the clutch linings, it's possible that the input-shaft seal on the gearbox has gone. Best of luck.
