#1 BD29068 captive nuts (Series 2 rhd)

Post by grimes6 » Mon Nov 11, 2019 3:52 am

I am fitting the shield assembly (bd28671 ) protecting the air cleaner inner tubes (for triple su,s ). The parts book lists 2 captive nuts (BD 29068) for the two set screws attached to the frame brackets. Can anyone please supply an image or description of these captive nuts and what they attach to ??
Many thanks in advance .
Regards,
Greg

I have been able to find two versions of "captive" nuts. Does anybody recognise either of these ?

Regards,
Greg

According to SNGB the part number for the shield is BD28668

These are normally secured to the square P-clip round the frame using a 1/4" UNF nut n bolt

Your part number for the captive nut returns 865 links to parts on SNGB parts site - but not to a captive nut I suspect - I'm not trawling through 856 links

I am no way an originality expert so potentially setting myself up for a fall here...

The ‘P’ clip holes are slotted which allows some movement of alignment for bracket-to-frame-to-panel. If a captive nut is slipped onto the end of said clip are you not losing the ability for any movement/alignment?

What your picture shows is correct.

Many thanks for the replies. I have fitted the shield with the two brackets and the other bracket which is riveted to the shield . This riveted bracket is attached to the top of the frame by a 1" setscrew (see attached image). All of this is fine until you try to fit the mud shield which has a bracket which shares this setscrew. The problem is you don't now have access to fit the washer and lock nut to this setscrew ! The only way I can get access is to take the riveted bracket off the air filter shield and then fit it to the setscrew and then rivet it to the shield. Is there a better way ???? The photo is taken from Chris Vines website.

Hi again Greg

I used 3BA SS screws rather than rivets for the mudguard bracket so was able to put it onto the said setscrew first and then put the mudguard on later.

Many thanks. I really can't see any other way of fitting the two panels - as soon as you fit the first shield you cannot access the second for attachment . I wonder how they did it on the production line - small children ???
Thanks to all who have replied .

Greg

That's what I reckon too. It's a shitty job. That's why the captive nut is the go, along with a pointed setscrew.
