#1 Mystery seats?

Post by dxke38 » Sun Jan 12, 2020 4:09 pm

Hi everyone, just been clearing the loft of my garage and found these seats which I put up there many years ago. They were with E spares but I don't recognise them as such. Does anyone know if they are Jaguar or not. The have been recovered in vinyl but are similar shape to ser 1.
Many thanks

They do look to be Jaguar, and the seat runners make me think they are from a '60's saloon like the MkII or 420. Or perhaps some Diamler.

Thankyou Steve, they are too small to be saloon seats and they also have one side at a slant to clear the gearbox housing similar to other E seats. The seat runners look similar to Series 3 but the recline levers are different. Could be from a different Leyland car poss Triumph I suppose.

They look rather like S2 seats which have lost the side covers of the reclining mechanism . The only other candidate which occurs to me is TR6

Sorry Steve but definitely not S3 seats. They do have a full width fore and aft adjustment bar but the back adjuster is totally different and the operating lever quite short and was always chromed. The 2+2 has an extra chromed lever facing rearwards for back seat occupants to operate. All had provision for head restraints too and if not specified, a visible blanking plug was fitted.

The Series 1.5-(i.e. early recliner) seats used twisted steel strip recline levers but not quite the same IIRC. Don't suppose the Daimler Dart was the source? Sister company and all that?

Both left and right hinges are the same as S3...so is the front adjuster bar and the seat runners..also on the S3 seats the base cover is held in place with circular upholstery clips to the lower tubular frame as can be seen on these seats......only anomaly is vinyl covers but op says they have been recovered and the black recline lever..but this does look newer and could easily have been add....

I was hoping that someone would recognise the seats straight away and save me a lot of research, ideally that they were E seats and could have helped someone with their car resto. Many thanks for trying all. I thought I'd better take a closer look so I've just climbed up into the loft again. I'm not now so sure that they have been recovered in vinyl, they may be original. I've posted some more photos which show another surprise' When I checked the bottom of the righthand seat it seems to be fitted with an electrical connection, possibly for a heated seat. So it seem unlikely that that they were ever in an E type, unless somebody knows differently. Thanks again for comments.

Thankyou Steve, you're spot on. I had forgotten about the seat belt warning on later cars. With that and the strange recline levers and no facility for headrests due to the vinyl covers, it really baffled me. The annoying thing is that I have a Ser 3 but they looked completely different. Mystery solved.
