SU Triple Carburettor advice
#1 SU Triple Carburettor advice
Hi,
My dad has the below SU Triple Carburettor in his garage. He purchased it for a Jaguar Coupe originally but
would like to know what engine/s it is for exactly? He plans to sell it but wants to get some more information first. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The tag on the float chamber AUD119F according to my SU catalogue is from an S-type HD6.
The carbs you have are HD8's, so I would assume it is not original to them.
I can't blow up your pictures for some reason, but the picture of the underside of the centre carb appears to have a bolt in the bottom of the float chamber for an AED choke device and the manifold is similar but is not an E-Type manifold. Perhaps it’s from a MK10?

The assembly is basically a MkX 4.2 or 420G manifold unusable on an E-type, with carbs that suit a saloon but are also too tall for an E-type. Not great news value-wise, I'm afraid, but at least you were honest enough to ask rather than put up a misleading eBay ad as some do.

Thanks for your reply. The tag you refer to on the float chamber, is it not AUD109R? Or am I looking at something else?
Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I'll do a bit more research to try and work out what price to sell them for.
Thanks for your help.

Smart move on the research, although in reality you can mostly only decide what to ask for them, rather than what buyers will pay you. If we could all decide how much money other people would give us we’d be rich. :-)
Sadly, the obvious option of converting the carbs to genuine E-type spec with the necessary new parts from Burlen, is probably not viable and you’d still need many hundreds for a correct manifold.
The best user for what you actually have is a MkX or 420G restorer or a saloon upgrader who fancies 3x SUs on ther XJ6. You might get a good price and less risk of come-back there than on an E-type
Of course, if your dad not only bought them thinking they’d fit his coupe but wass also tricked into paying E-type money for them, you’re stuffed now that you’ve posted here (unless you trick someone else into doing the same thing) .

Hi....these would also sell well to the kit/replica builder.......depending if they have been rebuilt with service parts or just as they look a decent set of used then a good price would be around £1200-£1500.... personaly i would just put them on ebay advertising them as Jaguar Triple HD8s..make a good note that they are not suitable for E types...depending how desperate you are to sell....start auction at £900.....you will then get the best price the market is prepared to pay.....if your in no rush then price at £1500 or make offer.....All the best....Steve

Thanks for the information Steve. I was thinking about the same price range, I'm certainly not looking to deceive anyone so of course i'll note that they are not compatible with etypes also. Thanks again.mgcjag wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2020 4:02 pmHi....these would also sell well to the kit/replica builder.......depending if they have been rebuilt with service parts or just as they look a decent set of used then a good price would be around £1200-£1500.... personaly i would just put them on ebay advertising them as Jaguar Triple HD8s..make a good note that they are not suitable for E types...depending how desperate you are to sell....start auction at £900.....you will then get the best price the market is prepared to pay.....if your in no rush then price at £1500 or make offer.....All the best....Steve

Some of the pictures link to postimages.org. These will not display for me either but if you right click on the picture, click "copy image location", open another tab in your browser and paste into the address bare followed by return, you will get the picture.

Thanks Jerome, that worked great!
I can now see that the centre carb has been converted to manual choke as per the E-Type (picture 4).
I assume that was not standard to the MkX etc?
Paul

It was not. The mark 10 had the famous "hisser" SU starting carburetter which fed a rich mixture to the manifold from the centre carburetter .

Just in case anyone else has an issue with cold start. I Today found that the brass plate shut off within the solenoid of the AED (Auxiliary starting carburetor/enrichment device) had become detached from the plunger that magnetically retracts it at need of choke.
This was intermittent as the little socket connection was worn. Sometimes the spring would keep the brass plate down and closed but solenoid clicked up giving the impression the choke was on.
Finally found why this car had cold starting issues.
