Thank you everyone. Its the outer edge of the hub that touches. Going to swap around the wheels this afternoon to see if that makes a difference.

Uh ok outer edge of the hub...i can see now on your photo where the caliper has been worn/ground down....not what i was expecting to see.......Personally I would get in touch with Zeuse to find out if these calipers are actually their correct option for E type. And contact wheel supplier for details of the hub in the wheels......you dont want a slight clearance on you new wheels you need a good clearance ...Steve
EDIT..just found this Photo o vented disc/Zeus caliper on Jag lovers...i see that the caliper has a moulded recess where the hub sits

This was the reply from Zeus.

"The calipers in your picture are one of our older sets and have not been in production for some years. We modified the design almost 10 years ago to accommodate the majority of wire wheels. This was because some of the less expensive wire wheels available in the market had issues with the way the wheel was wired in construction and conflicted with the caliper. Even with the better wheels it was as you have identified 'too close for comfort' and the wheel would just catch the caliper. They calipers where sold with a proviso that they may not fit with all wire wheels. We do not recommend in any way grinding the calipers as the brakes are a safety critical component on your vehicle. Best solution is to buy a new set of calipers. To help you out, we could offer a discount on the price."

Just for info, these are the alloy callipers from Zeus I fitted a couple of years ago - you can see the ‘contouring’ on the edges.

Thats really useful thank you Richard .. please tell me your brakes still aren't that immaculate, puts mine to shame. The company who make the wire wheels are going to make me a couple of spacers. Should get them next week. It should give me enough clearance with just the sacrifice of a couple of full rotations on the spinner thread, leaving 4 full rotations after fitted

I cant see how the wheel can be spaced out......it tightens on a taper to taper fit with the splined hub.....far better to look into spaceing the disc and caliper further inward(if possible with your set up)....this is done on numerous other builds....with the disc to hub spacers available correctly machined available off the shelf.....Steve

Agree with Steve - you can't put a spacer between the hub and wheel as the cones will not meet properly. You will probably wreck the splines on both hubs and wheels. I suggest you take up the Zeus offer and put your existing units on eBay.

Looking at Richard’s photo, you can see the inside of the standard disc runs very close to the upright. I don’t know if the uprated vented discs run as close, but if they do, you won’t have much clearance to space the disc further inboard.

If I was replacing the calipers I would probably go cooper craft. I'll post pics of the spacers when I get them next week.

Hi Jon.
I have fitted lots of Zeus calipers over the years to different Jaguars with out any problems.
If you did want to change yours I would take them up on their offer, they are not far away from you.
Your problem is made worse by the fact you have vented discs, I don't know what other people think but solid discs with uprated calipers are fine I have never had mine fade , & the non vented kit is cheaper .
There is some history between Zeus & Cooper Craft but both make good calipers Zeus do all their machining in house.
Sadly we are not aloud out & about at this time or I would come over for a look.
Neal.

Thank you Neal ... I didn't realise that they were just up the road from me! I have emailed them for a quote fitted and to get the vented changed to unvented. I only suggested Coopercraft as Peter services my car.

Got my e-type back last night from Coopercraft after having the new calipers and vented discs fitted and they are great. They have been designed to give reasonable clearance and they work fantastically with my green pads. They also look great. Problem finally solved.

That's good news. What turned out to be the cause of the rubbing?

I had a really really stuck on wheel to deal with a while ago. I reckon the spinner had been left off when the car was abandoned outside for 20 years or so. That is how the car arrived.

Nothing would move it.

I smacked it from behind with a large lead mallet and it failed to budge. I was welded on the spline with years of rust.

The only value in the wheel was only a hub for rebuilding.

I had to use one of my large pullers in the end. To do this I had to cut a few spokes to get the arms af a large 2 branch puller on the hub. I also had to make a brace to span over the end of the splined hub.

That was the only way to shift it.
Its true, but Enzo never said it

The rubbing was due to the zeus calipers not clearing all types of wire wheels. They have resolved that with the new versions, however I decided to change to Coopercraft as they also look after my car and I know they are good. I released the locked wheels in the end by driving around in circles with the spinners loose. By the way what would you guys use to clean the surface rust from the suspension components shown in the images below and also to stop it coming back? WD40 silicone?

Either take them off and have them plated or clean them up, apply a zinc heavy primer (Bilt Hamber do a good one) and then paint in a colour of your own choosing.

They can be cleaned up and carefully painted with Hammerite in situ. Lots of colours. I know it’s not for the purists but mine are gloss black and look good.

There is certainly always something to do on an E-type! unfortunately I also have a few other "needy" cars too. Thanks for the suggestion guys.
