#1 E-type S1 4.2 Differential replacement alternatives

Post by jpv » Wed Mar 04, 2020 9:43 pm

Hi guys,

I have a 1967 S1 E-type with a long ratio 3.07 final drive and Pwr Lock diff.
Unfortunately, somewhere during it's life, it must have ran without oil in the diff and got a really bad wear on crown and pinion and also in the diff satellite gears.

When we got the car 10 years ago, we've opened the diff and found the mess inside, with no replacement at hand, we rebuilt everything and fitted the worn gears back in. It was a bit noisy but ran fine for 50k km until it started to make some snapping sounds on roundabouts and similar recently.

I figure I need a full replacement as the ones in there must be on their final legs...

I'm in the market to buy a salvageable diff that I can use as a replacement but also am looking at more modern stuff.

What is the feedback on the Quaife torsen diff and the Gripper plate diff alternatives? are they better or offer no advantage over a Pwr Lock original?
