#1 getting a wheel 'orf!

Post by malcolm » Mon May 18, 2020 2:58 pm

Had a hell of a time getting a front wheel off today. I use a long breaker bar with one of the adaptors for the knock-0ff. Really works well. Usually.
This time, wouldn't budge. Got extensions on, wouldn't budge.
Reverted to the good old lump hammer, wouldn't budge.
Tried longer extension on breaker bar, and broke it. (is that why it's called a breaker bar?)
Hammer again, with a bigger lump hammer. Wouldn't budge.
Eventually, the patched up breaker bar got it free.
But if I was at the side of the road, might have been in trouble.
Any ideas on why it got so tight, and what I can do to prevent it happening again? Apart from not putting it on so tight? Copperslip on the threads?

Hi
You could check if the spinner isn't a bad aftermarket in first.
If not, tighten normaly the spinner, do a short travel and try to undo it and see what will hapen.

Hi Malcolm....any corrosion on the threads?...yes use copper slip on the threads and a smear on the splines....my assumption would be that they were previously overtightened if they are not corroded....personaly i always carry a lump hammer and block of wood just incase.......Steve

Thanks both, no corrosion, and having now put them back on (can tighten easily by hand before finishing off) they release easily enough. I take them off every year, think I must have overdone it last time. I'll try the copperslip.
