#1 Fans!

Post by marsh » Sun May 23, 2010 1:36 pm

Hello everyone

Not really the best day for my cooling fans to take a day off...

I've checked my fuses and they all seem fine, with 35As fitted as original.

Strangely, my horn also doesn't work (on the number 7 fuse also) and the heater blower only works on fast (but not slow), so I'm a little confused.

When I press the horn, I can hear a click under the bonnet that seems to come from a Lucas relay box just to the right of the battery that looks like it's seen better days, but that may just be engine grime. I've rechecked the connection here and they are all ok.

Has anyone any experience of this and is it likely my suspicions correct?

I'm keen to hear from anyone with similar experience you as I can't continue with less fans than Gary Glitter.

Best regards

Fuse 7 supplies the fans and horns relays control windings, not the horns and fans themselves. They are fed from an in-line fuse (67 in the wiring diagram). This fuse is located strapped to the top of the right hand side top engine frame.
What you can hear is the horn relay pulling in. If the horns do not sound then no supply is being fed through the relay contacts from the in-line fuse.
I would think that the heater fault is unconnected with the horns/fans fault.

Sounds to me like a bad earth somewhere.

Thanks to both of you.

Pete., that was another line of thought - any idea where would be a good starting point?

Frustratingly, all was working perfectly on Friday and I haven't disturbed anything in the interim period.

Are you sure that the in-line fuse is good? If so you could check that you have battery voltage to the fuse.

Thanks for the advice everyone - yes, it was the in line fuse and all is now well once again.

Very much appreciated.
