#1 Series 2 Ignition Switch Wire Positions

Post by Retroman » Thu Nov 19, 2020 11:59 pm

Hi,

Appreciate there is much on the forum re ignition switches but the info does not provide a much needed answer.

In fiddling under the dashboard I have inadvertently pulled three of wires off their terminals, two single and one double. Difficult to make out the colours but appear white/blue and white / yellow.

The rear of the switch has in anti clockwise order one double terminal, one single, one double, another single with a large core brown wire on it and a single terminal to the side of the brown wire terminal towards the centre.

Any idea how to figure out the correct connections would be very helpful as I can start the car and run it in one configuration but the ignition light does not come on at any time but the ignition warning lamp wire that runs to WL on the AW3 is live and lights up the warning lamp when I ground it with the ignition off.

Have checked the AW3 which is new and that is OK.

The battery is charging well by the way and voltmeter showing a good charge.

I have disconnected the battery for the time being, just to be on the safe side.

Help!!

Cheers,

Nigel.

Which switch do you have?
Can you post a pic of the back?

I have 3 single wires and 1 doubled wire that connected to the rear of my britax ignition lock. The switch portion, is a lucas 39449 with 1 single terminal and 3 double terminals.
There is yellow wire with a brown band that connects to terminal 1 and appears to connect to ballast relay on frame by the radiator.
There is a thick brown wire, mostly wrapped with electrical tape, that connects to terminal 2.
A doubled yellow wire connects to terminal 3
Finally a yellow wire with a green band connects to terminal 4 and appears to connect at the other end to fuse number 6
Hope this helps. See pics for wires and back of 39449 switch.
My switch has failed and I have a lucas 39415 to replace it. Anyone know the connections for this switch?
Roy

Hi Roy.....i think the easiest way is to test out the connections with a multimeter.....Steve

I like how these diagrams are available for some switches. I have not been able to find one for the 39449 or 39415 switches yet.
Does anyone have access to those?

Are all 157 sa variants the same then? The 39415 is also stamped 157 sa with completely different arrangement of connections.

Hi,

Many thanks for your help guys. I believe mine to be a Britax type as it locks the steering.

I will photo the back of it this weekend and post some pictures.

I have now got the car to start and run etc without burning out the wiring but the alternator warning light is no longer illuminating on start up, although the battery is charging.

Serves me right for being ham fisted.......again.

I've got the same switch on mine, but the wires have clearly been messed about with sometime in its previous life! There's supposed to be a buzzer if the key is left in the ignition, but that doesn't seem to be connected, although have just noticed the blanked off wire into the white connector.

Hard to see the colours, but I can check them further if you need, Nigel

Hi Again,

A belated but definitive answer to my original question for 1969 Series 2 owners who have to re connect the ignition barrel wires as there appear to be several variations on other members cars.

As the only way I could take a good look at what was going on with the wiring it helps that the drivers seat comes out in a few minutes to allow me to crawl into the footwell and look at the harness.

My understanding according to the wiring schematic is that the white wires present are either plain white or white and blue and white and red.

However..... all the dye on mine has faded and they now look all white and yellow!

However there is an easy way to identify where they go.

Two white/red wires? that share the same spade connector serve the coil and the fuel pump.

There are two single white wires, however one is of a noticeably larger core than the other.

The larger core wire serves the ignition and the smaller core serves the starter solenoid relay.

Two further brown wires one of which is a larger core serves the battery whilst the smaller serves the starter solenoid. The larger of the two has a piggy back spade connector to attach both wires together.

Looking at the rear of the ignition barrel there are four connectors with identifying marks.

Sorry all my attempts to provide a photo have failed so I will try and explain where they go.

In a clockwise direction:

2 o'clock double connector 'R' twin white / red wires? (fuel pump and coil)
4 o'clock double connector '15/54' larger core single white wire (ignition)
7 o'clock double connector '30' both brown wires (battery and starter solenoid)
11 o'clock single connector '50' smaller core white/blue? wire (starter solenoid relay)

That's it.

Hope it may be of some help.

Nigel.
