#1 Nylon fuel pipe

Post by lyons » Thu Jan 07, 2021 2:32 pm

Trying to bring car back to original, so has anybody found a supplier for the white nylon fuel pipe.

Obviviously SNG do a kit at a price but surely there is a cheaper supplier off the roll.

Thanks

Certainly it can be bought by the length - not much help to you but I have bought mine at Jaguar Spares Days. May I offer one bit of advice ? Do not use heat to soften it - it wrecks it . Instead use a lubricant such as WD40, red rubber grease or the like

Agree with Christopher, I’m sure I read somewhere that heating the fitting was an answer.
Never tried it though - probably best with no fuel in it !

Ah, Tim, that's an interesting point that I hadn't considered - it was just that when I was sold it I was told that under no circumstances was I to heat the pipe itself

I bought it at length from Aston (it was actually not that expensive and I wanted to make sure the quality is OK) but it extended few cm over next 2 days.

I am not sure what will the outcome be.

HOWEVER, on a previous attempt I bought one from an e-bay seller in US and his extended considerably over time AND started to leak like a fine strainer.

So, check what you get... Results in the boot may be terrible.

Heating the fitting with it being held in a vice and pushing on the pipe has been mentioned befor here on the forum quite a few times.....Steve

From experience if you don't heat it you'll really struggle to get it onto the fitting.

I have had some success using nylon tube from places that use it for pneumatic/hydraulic actuation. I bought 50m but we have done a lot of cars with it.

To be honest for 1 car I'd be buying it from SNGB.

I think it's better to heating the pipe gently with a heater gun and puch firmly onto the fighting.
Heating the pipe is easy to control. Heating the fighting too mutch is'nt good for the nylon.

Heating the nylon pipe with hot water also works well. Did that with mine and it allowed me to shape the pipe and attach to fittings much easier. No problems since.

You don’t need to heat it, the pipe can be held in a pair of pipe flaring collets as per pic, if you don’t have any you can make by drilling a 3/8” hole between two steel or ally plates held together in a vice so you end up with something as per pic. Works beautifully, hold in vice with about an inchbpoking out, a couple of taps with a soft mallet and job done. Did a full car set in under an hour for the princely sum of £8.

Hi Robbie...makes sense to me......your just useing the collets as shown or something similar to wrap around the pipe and be able to grip it in a vice without crushing it.....Steve

Maybe it was a little vague. The main problem on assembling the pipes is actually holding the pipe tightly without crushing it, so the banjo can be inserted. The split clamp/collet will hold the end of the pipe nice and tight without any damage/distortion allowing the banjo to be tapped in, it certainly doesn’t need any heat and works very well dry.
It’s also worth fitting one end only and trial fitting to car first and marking the correct orientation of the second fitting (if they’re both banjos) as unlike rubber, the nylon doesn’t take too kindly to being twisted when trying to line up the second end. Sits much nicer too. Hope this helps. Chris.

Gents, I think you are trying to make rocket science out of something quite simple. :-)

Just heat up the banjo, heat the pipe a little so that it's flexible (50C is enough) and slide it in.

If you overheat the pipe, just cut a bit off.

Heating only the nylon tube is not the best procedure..it cools too quick...heat both the nylon and the metal banjo fixture...the metal of the banjo retains the heat far longer
Hot water from the kettle and immerse in a mug is fine...I had no problems if I gripped the nylon in my hand and pushed firmly....sometime a bit of extra assistance from a length of 2x2 softwood applied to the banjo was helpful....;)

I've done this without any problem by heating only the tube but I do want to say that it's only one solution among others but really, I think you make a big problem out of a small job.
