#1 matching numbers?

Post by alfred » Sun Jan 10, 2021 11:21 pm

Just a dumb question: should the engine number and the cyl head number match? I had an interested buyer look at my 68 2+2 and he said my cyl number was different so not original to the car.

thanks for the help.

They should match. where present, although cylinder heads stopped being painted and numbered in the later sixties.

I thought that the block number is the important match ...cylinder heads could be easily replaced and therefore wouldn’t have an engine number stamped

Ideally, Block, Cylinder Head, Crankshaft and Flywheel should all have the same numbers on them.... Unsurprisingly, the latter two are not often available . If you ever have your engine reconditioned get these photographed when it is stripped down - a really nice thing to add to the provenance of the car.

Yes...mine has everything but the flywheel stamped! I was rather delighted to see the engine number on the crank !

I saw a post on FB recently that showed a gearbox mount plate with the body number stamped in it....Steve
