#1 Radio Power Supply Location?

Post by tbone » Fri Jan 15, 2021 7:33 pm

My 1963 FHC has its original Blaupunkt radio. When I bought the car some twenty years ago, I found the separate power supply was simply laid on top of the hardura and the latter screwed to the top of the footwell. So, a big lump, not fastened well, and looked bad. I am finishing a complete rotisserie restoration and want to do it right. So, where should the power supply go? There's not really room to squeeze it behind the glove box cubby, and anywhere else it's a prominent eyesore. Any suggestions?

Bill, does your radio appear here:

Sorry, can’t help with where the power supply goes, but it’s always interesting if owners can identify an original fit part

How big is it? Really, a 63 Blaupunkt had a separate power supply?
I have a small blue tooth amp inside the center radio console, ‘course i don't have a radio in the console either.

The dimensions of the power supply are about 6x7x1.5 inches

Might be room for it and the radio case inside the radio console. It can just sit on the trans tunnel top in there, or perhaps above/behind the trim shield under the glove although sounds like you tried that.
At only an 1.5" high it shouldn't be very obtrusive screwed to the top of the foot well where the radio was I guess, although visible if you look. Trunk is where my amp for my blue tooth set up is. But you gotta run power(under car) and speaker wires from it if its an amp. (under trim)

Surprised a radio from 1963 has a separate amp, radio sounds like a later add. Is it a standard old format that will fit the orig radio consoles or is it the rectangular DIN box mount?

Take a look at the link from Geoff. Maybe ID it there, lots of radios and some with separate power supplies.

I have achieved this with a Blaupunk Koln and separate amp in my S1 4.2 console. It’s tight and will need slim speakers but manageable. If you have new carpet/under carpet on transmission tunnel, check it doesn’t push the centre console up too far as this is the other area to watch out for. Here’s an example of exactly how I mounted my amp to rear/top or radio. I also have a Bluetooth adapter that fits original Blaupunkt equipment (Black cable on second picture). The fixed brackets in the console will mount to the side of the amp when positioned correctly, this provides stability to the rear of the radio/amp as it does have some weight. Carefully feed wires and cable tie for security. You have room on top of radio, and under ashtray, to store excess cable.

Hi thanks for aswering. I tried to put radio (Frankfurt serie X) and other "back box" inside central console (in every position) but without result. In my case I changed also original one speaker to two speakers. Finally I desisted and installed amplifier box under glover box, It wasn't my prefer solution but it's hidden.
