#1 S1 4.2 oil level

Post by phoenix » Fri Mar 12, 2021 12:01 pm

Hi I have just filled the engine with the recommended 15 pints of oil . This was a bone dry engine (Mk10) with correct E type sump and the short dipstick spigot in the block . Before even turning the engine over and filling filter etc the level on the dipstick is below minimum . Any thoughts Bryan

Wrong dipstick? Dipstick not straight so going into the baffle rather than straight into the sump?
Did the dipstick drop in easily, or did you have to push it?
How long did you wait for the oil to work it's way down? It takes ages.
Is the engine dead level? If it's on even a slight incline forward, it won't show full.

You told us the other day that you filled it with the correct amount of oil and it was between the two marks

Yes but since then I had to fit the short tube in the block which the dropped the level on the dipstick .Bryan

I levelled the car up and it is now about correct on the dipstick. It is a newly refurbished engine so it was bone dry of oil . Thanks I feel like a dipstick. Bryan

No XK engine is installed level AFAIK.

They should all slope slightly rearward, so the crank and propshaft form a straight line. The car needs to be level but not the sump. Some of Jaguar’s old brochures had ‘ghost’ drawings at the back in the Specifications section. They show the tilt quite well.

In fact if Steve is using an XJ engine in his C-Type replica he will see the wide rear part of the sumo is wedge-shaped and deeper at the front. It’s also why the IRS ‘dog bones’ on the diff vary between models, with the shortest wheelbase (E-Type) having the steepest angle.
