#1 Bonnet catch rattle

Post by on2wheels » Sat Oct 16, 2010 9:01 pm

Hi,
I have an annoying rattle. No its not the pills.
Bad road surfaces here in Devon.
I thought it was the window at first. But no.

Bonnet lock lever against its escutcheon. Chrome against chrome.

I can almost get rid of it by making bonnet catch tighter.
But then it becomes difficult to lock the bonnet.
Has anyone made a gizmo to sort this?
Or have I have a piece missing? Should it run in a plastic sleeve?
Nick.

Nick, the factory fitted an o ring between the escutcheon and the closing hook. Be prepared to buy a few though as they don't last long!

If I recall correctly, the lock operating lever consists of the little chrome lever inside the cockpit, which is attached to a straight rod which diappears through the round chrome plate screwed to the rear face of the A post bulkhead.

At the bonnet catch end of that rod it turns through 90 degrees to engage with the latch mechanism. A flat plate is attached to the rod some distance short of the 90 degree bend. That flat plate sits close to the inside of the front of the bulkhead when the bonnet is latched - you can't see this without removing the lever as it is hidden inside the bulkhead cavity. On my car there were the remains of a piece of rubber on the flat plate. I replaced this with a piece of high-density foam - the sort used to make seats for race motorcycles. What then happens is that as you push the chrome lever forward to latch the bonnet, the piece of foam gets squeezed between the flat plate and the inside of the bulkhead front plate, and this acts to prevent rattling. It is harder to explain in words than it would be if you simply remove the operating lever to have a look.

Well if you will use prototype parts listings Angus (said Pete, praying his J38 parts book is later than Angus's)

My 66 and 73 and 69 all have/had the chunky foam pad although one of them might have been felt, not sure. Your early cars were probably Jag's first attempts which they eventually got right with the later design. But hey, if you want to live in the past with an outdated model E-type be my guest :-)

Just admit defeat this time Pete! ;)

I think you'll find the pads were fitted to all the cars with the 'O' ring added later (later cars had them both).

Thanks guys.
But please don't get so worked up! :P

When I ask questions about other ailments, such as

fan-belt pulleys..........
cam shaft noise, adjustments etc..........
Not a lot of response.

But when I mention what sounds like a door/window RATTLE!
I'm buried in helpful answers.
Thank you all very much. I will look out for felt/sponge pad.
Tap washer fitted at the moment. (It works)

At least now I know what excites everyone.

Yes, but unlike you Angus, I have no use for rubber rings the size of a bonnet rod...
