#1 Advice on fitting 5 speed LT77 box

Post by Twincam » Mon Oct 25, 2010 11:06 pm

Hello have just purchased a Ser 11 E Type roadster and as synchromesh on second gear is not very good so have decided to replace it with a 5 speed gearbox. Have bought a box on E Bay item no 23053666955 it is a LT77 box type 20A. Complete with bell housing, and other parts. I am hoping this will be a direct replacement and other than shortening the prop shaft. If anyone has done this and I?m sure there must be any advice would be appreciated ps my rear axle ratio is 2.88 to 1

Hard luck. It's better to ask before you buy.

The box is unusable in your car without serious body modification. If you'd had a 2+2 you'd only have to cut and shut the gear lever somehow because it is too far back for any E-type console but in your case you'd have to hack about the rear of the transmission housing and the cross member which are structural panels. Sell it to someone with an XJ or 2+2 auto would be my advice.

Thanks for reply you have me wondering now, but looking around found this on a Jaguar forum

"I have converted my E Type Jaguar series 1 from a MOD Gearbox to a 5 speeder,I have used an LT77 5 speed manual gearbox from an XJ6 series 3.The clutch from the series 3 bolted straight onto the E type flywheel ,The gearbox bell housing bolted straight onto the E type engine back plate.I had to change the clutch slave to a series 3 slave cylinder and the propshaft had to altered."

The clue is in the fact he changed it from a MOD gearbox to a LT77. You can only do the MOD conversion to a 2+2 so he obviously owned the longer wheelbase car.
