As I understand it the V12 is able to run on unleaded but it is recommended to use high octane 98 / 99 RON ie Shell V Power or BP Ultimate or siimlar.

My Series 3 ran fine on regular <shrug>
Drank so much of the stuff I'm sure I'd have noticed if it wasn't to the car's taste. Mind you, it was only a bit worse than David's VSE02 car on a 2.88 diff and five speed, so perhaps it was OK.
The issue is fuel/timing compatibility. CR has to be pretty high before you get detonation regardless, so if somebody doesn't want to pour *very* expensive juice down their Jag's throat, just expensive juice, you merely need to back the timing off a tad to suit if it does pink under load at low/medium revs in high gears. Chances are a clean engine won't pink anyhow.
All post-war Jags can run on unleaded with no modifcation, so when you see somebody advertising an XK-engined car as 'converted for unleaded' you know they have been ripped off. I run my S2 on cheap Shell stuff mostly, with the very occasional tank of ?1.69/L four star leaded, to perk the valve seats up a touch. Probably more psychological than anything...
