#1 woodruff keys

Post by phoenix » Fri May 20, 2022 12:09 pm

Hi I am just building up a 4.2 S1 engine and I have found the new woodruff keys from a well known supplier are to wide. they look ok in profile but to wide to fit the groove . Are there different ones on other 4.2 engines ?

You've probably just been sold poorly sized generic ones. AFAIK the crank woodruff keys on XK engine cranks are the same.

Welcome to the QC department! As a Quality Inspector, you will be expected to receive parts from various Jaguar parts suppliers and determine if they are suitable for actual use. If you deem the parts are not dimensionally, functionally, or aesthetically equivalent to the original part, be prepared to stand your ground and make the case via photographic proof for the parts being substandard as you are the first Inspector ever to bring this to the attention of the so called Customer Service Dept. After some number of communications you will advised of one of three outcomes: 1) correct parts are on the way, 2) those are the correct parts and your car has been modified in some way, or 3) you should feel lucky that anyone is making any parts at all for these cars, even if the parts are rubbish.

Of course this is an unpaid position, and in fact you will pay for the parts, sometimes 2-3 times until you get a usable one, as well as extra shipping for returns and repurchases, and lose months worth of project time per year waiting for things that don't fit, which don't match the purveyors website description/images, or which are suddenly no longer available. Of course occasionally some items you inspect will be just fine and suitable for purpose, but don't let that go to your head lest you lower your guard and forget to inspect items until the moment of time critical assembly only to discover you now have the choice of searching for/waiting for the correct item or doing the hardware store bodge boogie.

So good luck, stay alert, and keep your chin up. We are all in this together.

All the same. They are meant to be a light interference fit and not drop-in. What width are they? Do they not tap into any of the slots? Maybe your crank is bruised. Depending on your accurate width figure you could stone them down a fraction or put a very slight chamfer around the circumference.

Find a local company that specialises in selling electric motors.

Call them and see if they have 3/16" x 3/4" woodruff keys and buy yourself a couple if they do.
