#1 Help identifying noise
Can anyone help me with a noise from my Series 2 please.
After a run ( more than 15 miles), when I push the E backwards in to my garage, there is a twanging/ clicking/ ticking noise from the rear of the car as it moves. It doesn’t appear to be from the diff as it is too high pitched, and too frequent to be a uj. When cold, no noise. It almost sounds like a creaking spring, but unable to reproduce it when moving suspension.
Anyone else experienced similar.
Have hopefully attached a video of the noise
Thank you
Simon

Sounds like a propshaft or driveshaft UJ starting to fail they take some diagnosing when they first start to wear look for rust marks around them

Loose or broken wheel spoke? Try running a pencil around them to see if they all make the same sound, a loose one will sound different.

Do you still have the mushroom shaped splashguards on the driveshafts. These frequently become misaligned and start to touch the hub carriers, and that produces a characteristic high pitched squeaking noise, which sounds to correspond closely with your description of the noise

Looked at this further and the noise appears to be coming from the gearbox.
If both rear wheels are raised, then one turned by hand the prop shaft turns and the noise clearly comes from the box.
The gearbox has always suffered the reverse idler noise when clutch pedal released but otherwise fine.
Would anyone know if it is normal to hear the gearbox when turning a road wheel by hand?
It is not audible with the engine running, only rolling (pushing) at very low speed. Worse when hot.
Also, when one road wheel is turned by hand, the opposite one turns in the same direction, I don’t think it has limited slip.
Any advice much appreciated
Simon

Hi both wheels turning the same way is a sure sign of having an LSD .
Have you checked the prop flange bolts to gearbox flange are not loose , they're notorious for not being tight

That's what happens with an LSD. When you turn one wheel on a car without an LSD the other wheel will rotate in the opposite direction.
I don't know about the gearbox noise.

I would change your gearbox oil as a starting point. Use MT90.
It may be low in oil, however the only easy way to check this is to drain it.

Thanks all for your advice:
Discovered it must have LSD!
Have changed gearbox oil within the last 1000 miles to Redline MT-90, level okay.
My real concern is the loud clicking noise from the gearbox when pushing/rolling very slowly when hot.
Can be replicated when cold (quieter though) by turning raised wheels/prop shaft. Approx 12 clicks per rotation of prop shaft.
Appreciate your help
Simon

Oil level checked using level plug.
Beginning to suspect reverse idler. Strangely, the noise in neutral when clutch pedal released, which I had always put down to reverse idler, appears to have become quieter as the clicking noise has developed.
Thank you

Another favourite is hand brake cable rubbing on propshaft.
