I am having trouble engaging 1&2 gear on my 1962 E type and it gets worse on a long drive as the engine get hot. I have slight fluid on the outside of the rubber piston seal so i want to change the whole clutch cylinder. I am running and on a 5 speed Getrag gear box and the existing slave cylinder has a number 3232639 stamped on it. Not sure if this is a standard slave cylinder seeing as i have a Getrag box.
Any help would be appreciated as to what i need to order up.

Are you losing fluid, is the level down in the
reservoir tank, did you try bleeding the system?

The reservoir seems ok but the there is signs of fluid after the seal.

Tony : why don't you withdraw the piston and seals and see if the bore is in good condition - if it is , then why not use a rebuild kit ?

It appears you have a standard (short) slave cylinder, of the the non-hydrostatic variety, so a basic rebuild kit may sort it if the bore condition is good. That said, some of the kits on the market today have ever so slightly undersized pistons/seals (metric vs imperial?) and are prone to short lives due to "rocking" in the bore. So measure the replacement parts diameters carefully and compare to what you have.
A currently popular mod is to use an early '90's Isuzu piston/seal which is a quality OEM piece in the correct size, and has (IMHO) the better design of an annular seal fitted to the piston vs the free floating cup type seal that Jaguar specified. I bought an entire NOS Isuzu slave cylinder (PN 12413) for less than $20 a couple of years ago and just used the internals.

#7 Re: Clutch slave cylinder
After a clutch failure last year i did use a kit to try and solve the problem. However with fluid passing the piston seal i am assuming either cylinder is worn or the seal was not up to standard. For the price of a new slave cylinder i would replace the lot as i am going down to Southampton in a couple if weeks. I believe there are uprated cylinders available. Is it worth going for one of these or a standard one.
