Curly hub wheels on S2 front uprights
#1 Curly hub wheels on S2 front uprights
The long and winding road of my S1 restoration (July 62) has brought me to a key decision point on front brakes/hubs/wheels. Although in bits for years, restoration has been progressing now at a pace. Car has S2 uprights (actually 420G I believe) and S3 flat hub wires. Would curly hub wheels fit OK or would I need to revert to original uprights?

Odd combination you have...what brake discs and calipers.....rough S1 curyl hub wheels can be had on ebay quite cheap just to trial fit...or ask here if someone local will let you try on their spare....Steve

Flat (or easy clean) wire wheels are correct for an S2.

Steve, the 420G uprights were fitted years go as they came complete with 3 pot callipers (v heavy) and vented discs. These will be replaced with modern lightweight versions.

With any non standard setup its best to beware..I would trial fit the type of wheel you want on your set up before you purchase a full set....inset/offset and center hub of a S3 wheel is a bit different curly hub wheel...Steve

Andrew I seem to recall reading in a magazine an ‘authority’ informing that 420G uprights were a good upgrade and had stronger stub axles (actually I now believe the stub axles same as S1). Also another source (forgotten now) said curly hubs would snag these.
Thanks for confirming the wheels are interchangeable. Advice from the forum based on actual experience is invaluable to override misleading ‘alternative facts’!

If you go here and look at standard wheels, it says they're suitable for the 420.

I think my mate Ron had 420 uprights on his S1 coupe, he certainly had standard curly hub wires on that car.

As you believe, the Stub Axles are the same. The 420G, or S2 E Type version upright is required to take the 3 spot brake caliper oi the S2 E Type, for the bolt pattern to attach the caliper to the upright is different. If the brake rotor is a ventilated type, its also likely that your front calipers also have spacer block between the halves of the caliper. The Front Brake Caliper for an S3 car is the same as that for an S2 car except the the standard S2 caliper doesn't have the spacer blocks that are used with the S3 version.
Upgrading the Front Brakes should be done with an upgrade to the back so as to retain a reasonable brake balance between front and back.

Bill
