#1 67 FHC real bad noise after 1st start-up

Post by autoalain » Fri Feb 16, 2024 5:36 pm

Folks, turned motor over for 1st time, got oil pressure, and no funny noise, turned many times all good.
actually started rite up , real bad noise sounds like starter gear hung up on flywheel, but only
after startup, yep, had starter and bendix all apart, all looked good and almost new, put in car.
when I just took it apart now I noticed the lever that hooks onto the solenoid has a 1/2 moon
on top of it, does this 1/2 moon thin lever that pushes gear forward/backward)
face the solenoid or does it face back of car?????.
I """THINK"" maybe somehow the ring gear did not go back into off position and may have
slipped off the 1/2 moon part because I may have reversed this shaft that pushes.pulls the ring gear.

Folks, looked at part manual for this issue, I do not have a ""starter spigot plate"" part c22488,
does this go between starter motor and bellhouse, could the lack of this part be the cause of my noise???

Standard set up yes you need a spigot plate amd yes without it the ting gear can hit the starter pinion and cause horrendous noise...yes xj6 dod gone as Standard transmission...but you need to count the teeth to ensure its correct..Steve

You need the bushes (ring dowels) as well to locate the plate to the bellhouseing and get the starter in the correct position
