Series 1 4.2 Stereo Speakers

Chaps, I am just finishing the rebuild of my 66 4.2 Roadster. I am fitting the Retrosound stereo but need to find a suitable Co Axial stereo. Can anyone recommend a suitable speaker that fits the existing holes in the console. Remember its a 4.2 so has bigger speakers. thanks andrew

Hi Andrew,
I’ve recently changed over to Focal speakers after some deliberation over correct fitment. I did a lot of homework, particularly as console space is tight with original Blaupunkt and amplifier.
I did open out the (4) speaker mounting holes slightly just to give me some ‘wiggle’ room but this was minimal.

Thank you Steve. I shall take a closer look at these. Do you recall whether the 16.5cm was the overall diameter or the distance between fixing holes?

Diameter or diagonal across the full speaker, Andrew.
As you will note from the picture above, there’s plenty of flat mounting ‘lip’ to open up slightly for the four console studs and corresponding nuts to hold onto. Also doesn’t damage the all important speaker membrane. My console is original 1965 S1 4.2, which may well differ from others.

Previously I had the Visaton speakers fitted, (thread #4 in link below), but they had extended mounting rings on to reach the wider mounting points.

Hi Andrew,

Also looking at this topic for my project. Found the Roadstar DRS-22 with installation depth of only 35mm, so it would fit also with a larger radio. Not sure about availability in EU/UK or quality. I have seen them on US Ebay and Aliexpress.

Thank you Guys. I have actually gone for the Retrosound speakers as I purchased their stereo. Did anyone find out what the threads are on the mounting studs on a 4.2? Slightly coarser than UNF by the looks of things.

Funnily enough, I went to the recycling skip yesterday.

Having spent tens of hours re-jigging my speakers, about 7 years ago, modifying the hidden bits of the centre console, fitting a hidden BlueTooth amp etc, adding hidden tweeters, I very quickly decided that I had wasted every minute.

And it all went in the skip.

Unless you spent a long time in traffic, in an OTS I found the sound wasn’t good enough to do justice to the music, and when I get the car on the road again I’ll use my portable Bose Mp3 player via Spotify, as just plonking it on the dash gives a better sound than the footwell speakers ever did.

I also realised that listening to the engine gave me more pleasure than either Haydn, Dire Straits, or the Rolling Stones !!!

I hope it works out better for others who go down this route.
