Steve - and anyone else in the same position - just for info, Robey's no longer stock any of these items - any of the BD27546-type bolt/setscrew, etc.

I am told the difference in the "/3" or "/4" - or in the case of the one I needed, the "/6" - is the length - but I am a little dubious that this is the complete story, as the "/4" on Robey's site is described as a countersunk screw - the seat slide and the (mullered!!) bolt that came out of mine suggest that it should be a bolt-head rather than a countersunk screw!

But in any event, Robey's, SNGB, and Manners all say the item has been deleted, they cannot get stock and cannot suggest an alternative. I'll manage for now, but will keep looking for a suitable alternative.

Thanks for your help and suggestions.

Hi - just to update this - used Namrick as suggested - 1/4" UNF at 1+1/14" long, fitted just fine. The service from Namrick was also speedy - didn't want to use their internet site to order as it didn't show as secure - but their service via the 'phone was excellent. Thanks for the tip, Steve.

#26 What sizes are used where?

Post by Herzeg » Fri Apr 15, 2016 1:44 pm

Hi Everyone

My big problem is that I just got an unrestored car (S2 OTS) that has every conceivable type of screw fitted, usually on the same part. It's also missing a few bits like the fixings for the door striker.

I've got all the manuals but nowhere does any of them say that this door trim or that fixing uses a screw size xxx. Is there anywhere a comprehensive list of what screw nut and bolt is used for each piece. If I had this I could buy in bulk, rather than buying piecemeal from SNG.

Any help appreciated

John

John

The best advice is to go on the Namrick website and buy in bulk all conceivable sizes you will need. Then buy compartmented trays to store them in and label up before starting work. It makes the whole job so much easier.

The SCParts catalogue lists the various sizes as do other places.

The main sizes needed are;
1/4 UNF set screws in all lengths up to about 2"
1/4 UNF bolts in all lengths from 1" to 3 1/2"
5/16 UNF set screws in all lengths up to about 2"
5/16 UNF bolts in all lengths from 1" to 3"
100 Nuts, normal and nyloc in all sizes
3/8 UNF you dont need that many so just get a few of each size
10 UNF get a few of every length, nuts and washers to suit
Mixed flat washer pack
Mixed serated washer pack
Mixed spring washer pack

Order bigger bolts/set screws and nuts to suit each task, they are usually suspension bolts which if you can re-use or rechrome is sometimes OK if they are OK. If you order from Namrick you get a day or two later anyway. You will save lots of money and have the convenience of having nuts/bolts when you need them.

The link in the Forum KB is correct as I changed them all after Dropbox altered their terms of service but I could not go and search for individual posts that reference them. Link is now:

I have changed it in the post on page 1 of this thread as well.

Herzeg,
The door striker has two countersunk [allen head] screws that pass through the door frame and screw into the door lock. They are 3/16" Diameter. The thread is Unified Coarse [UNC]. ALSO the two slotted flat head screws that hold the dook lock to the door frame are also 3/16" UNC

It can take a while to understand what bolts are used where on an E type, however as you get further into the project I hope you can start to see the light at end of tunnel. Thread form on the E is virtually UNF [Fine] or UNC [Coarse] The size is the diameter, ie someting that looks like 3/8" and is Fine is....... a 3/8" UNF etc.
hope this helps

Hi Robsan

Thanks for the info. I did get a major refurb and upgrade over the winter so probably those parts will have been replaced but i will be digging around over the spring and summer weeding out the wrong and missing parts.

The full car bolt kit from monocoque metalwork looks like money well spent particularly if you have the wrong bolts in some areas. I guess the postage and import duties on 4kg of hardware from the states won't be cheap though. I'm probably going to bite the bullet and buy this kit unless there's a similar one available this side of the pond but judging by the previous comments it looks unlikely.

I bought their ‘Monster’ set - pretty much everything to fasten, the frames, suspension, exhaust, engine mounts, door hinges etc etc. It was a bit overkill as I have re-used many of the original Bees & Gkn items where safe to do so but no harm in having a few spares for future use!

Would 100% support the Namrick recommendation - always very helpful and very fast supply.

Purchased a 'thread detective' from Thomas Smith which has been invaluable throughout the winter work. Pricey but saved me loads of time where I wanted to replace specific bolts with upgrades (SS or Chrome).

Thomas Smith also very good for mixed boxes of Stainless Steel sets.

Stainless steel and chrome as upgrades? Cosmetically, maybe. Most times though, weaker and more prone to failure.

Yes Stuart, definitely cosmetic 'upgrades' only. Clumsy wording.
