#1 Rear hub carrier - variant identification

Post by Pavel Prochazka » Thu Jan 02, 2014 11:40 am

Hello to all and happy new year,

I am restoring 1966 E Type and found that both left and right hubs and carriers differ. I was rying to find more on internet but no pics or description of difference found. Up to now I have found following (hope it is correct). Should any of you provide me with pictures or another information?

S1 3.8 up to chassis 850503, 877182, 860450 and 885984
- C.19063
S1 3.8 following above and S1 4.2 up to chassis 1E.1236, 10978, 20638 and 31002
- C.20811
S1 4.2 following above numbers
- C.25216
S2
- C.26701
S3
- C.26699

When searching for a replacement for a damaged hub carrier on my 62 S1 I found the key changes from the original hub carriers were:

Change 1 - The diameter of outer bearing oil seal increased (by about 5mm), plus web beneath the outer bearing also thicker than original.

Change 2 - Water throwers were added on inner face of the hub carrier.

Hub carriers were also very similar across the range of Jaguar models so its not inconceivable that non E-Type hub carriers have made their way into E-Type IRS's.

I can't help re S2 or S3.

Neil

Just to clarify my question - I am trying to identify, which variant is correct, not where to buy new or used one. On the left side (which was damaged by an accident) I have found this

and on the right side I have found this:

Which of them (if any) is correct for 1967 S1 4.2?

Many thanks,

Pavel

My 1966 S1 2+2 has the LOWER version.

I have seen the upper one on some XJ6s, it seems to me as it?s the later one.

Good luck finding an old one. I gave up and repaired mine (the inner sealing ring shoulder was ruined, JagWaugh made me a ring and I screwed and glued it in using JBWeld.

Carsten,

thanks for the reply, can you remember if the hub had "vertical ring" near the carrier as shown on the upper picture? I would guess factory was trying to avoid dirt coming to outer bearing of the carrier, but when they add it?

I think on the upper picture is not the one from XJ6 or similar, for XJ6 I would expect "teeth" at the top of the carrier as shown here:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jaguar-Rear-H ... 2585e95ace

Maybe this should be the one for S3 - C.26699?

Many thanks for the answer,

Pavel

Pavel,

As I understand it a 66 should have the water deflector on the back of the splined hub. It's missing from the one in the 2nd picture but the outer edge of the hub carrier is chamfered for this very purpose.

As per Carsten's comment, the top picture looks to be the more recent hub as the one below looks like the type I have seen on most s1's.

Neil

You mean the water deflectors ? I have no idea when they arrived, but my car has them.

If they become loose, you can try to re- fit and stamp the Metal to hold it. If that does not help - you can tack- weld it (I did).

Hello all,

I am in correspondence with Richard Mark Smith and he answered that correct variant for 1966 should be the same as on the upper Picture (he has sent me picture with carrier looking like the upper one) and pointed the lower picture as earlier variant and liable to cracking. So, when Jaguar introduced new carrier with "teeth" above wishbone mount?

Cheers,

Pavel

#9 Rear Hub Carriers

Post by Maikel » Sun Apr 24, 2016 8:08 am

Hello friends,

I cam across these different types of hub carriers, one is the early, one is a 67 and the last one is of an XJ but could also be of an S3

To use the far right, the most modern one I think I need to cut off some f the flange on the top. But how much? Did anyone of you did this before?

I just want to make sure it does not hit the frame but the bump stoppers

All help is appreciated.

Thanks
Maikel

My '64 (October'63 build) has the castings in your second photo, but with the water deflector rings. The inner seal is the small diameter.
