#1 Will A XJ6 S1 inlet manifold fit?

Post by fandeland » Sat Sep 19, 2015 1:57 pm

I'm in the process of replacing the US spec series 2 intake (with Strombergs)?to twin SU's from a XJ6 S1

I'd like to get rid off the original primary and secondary intake manifolds and fit the XJ single manifold. The SU tops are now about 2cm higher than the Stromberg. I'm not yet near fitting the bonnet back onto the car so the question is : will the carbs hit the bonnet once closed?

Probably. Note that depending which style of manifold you have there may be problems hooking up the bypass hose and the air bleed. The carb XJ pmanifolds normally have a small built-in header tank too.

I finally managed to get the bonnet back on the car. I can now confirm that the front carb does foul the bonnet when closed. :banghead: just some clearance is missing, probably 7-8mm only
I'll refit the original US spec inlet manifold and modify it to bypass the secondary plenum.

Just wondered why you're replacing the Strombergs with twin SUs? I knmow the US spec twin strombergs aren't as efficient as the UK triple SUs, but didn't think that 2 SUs would be better than 2 strombergs? Or is there another reason?

I primarily wanted a cleaner look and get rid off the complicated US spec inlet manifold. I'm told that the SU have better airflow caracteristics so I'm hoping to get good drivability. Must say that with the couple of runs I have done so far, I'm not disappointed. Finally I have better tuning knowledge of SU's.

What are you doing for the air filter box? Are you continuing with the Stromberg US-style box, or swapping over to the S1 triangular funnel and cylinder, or maybe just K&N's
